Without a doubt the skiing in Val d'Isere and its sister ski resort Tignes has to be some of the best in the world. Lying at the head of the steep Isere Valley in Savoie, it is not the most attractive of places, but this is made up for by the wonderful skiing. Perhaps the only drawback is that it is not the best place for a novice although the beginners slopes are adequate.

For those who like really good food - Mexican, Chinese, Scandinavian, American and of course French - as well as buzzing bars and a hectic night life, there are few French ski resorts to beat it!

Val d'Isere, together with Tignes make up an impressive domain known as the Espace Killy, named after Jean Claude of that name who took the three gold medals in the 1964 Olympics. It boasts over 300 kilometres of piste together with some of the best off trail skiing for two plank skiers and snowboarders in the Alps.

Because the snow conditions are so good and there is so much of it with a season lasting from November to May, it is essential to be an early riser if you want the best snow! And remember that in this area 'black runs' mean black.

The French Railways ski train from Waterloo (UK) runs Friday nights to Bourg St Maurice arriving around 0830 on the Saturday morning, leaving a 40 minute drive to Val d'Isere and Tignes. With the return train leaving on Saturday evenings this gives a full seven days skiing for one week skiers.
